However, accurate African history would prove to us that these explorers came to exploit, loot, kidnap and enslave Africa and Africans of its human and natural resources.

Africa had existed for millions of years and was doing well in terms of civilization and modernisation. The Egyptian empire and the Benin empire among others was proof to this.

Some of our ancestors, kings and other leaders were coerced to cooperate with these European invaders who stole from Africa and did much to ensure the continent remained underdeveloped even to this day.

However, this didn't happen without resistance from some courageous Africans and their monarchs who were highly revered.

One of such great kings was Oba Ovonramwem Nogbaisi of the great Benin Kingdom.

BRIEF HISTORY OF BENIN KINGDOM

There are claims and counter claims as to the origin of Edo people of the Benin kingdom of Niger Delta, Nigeria. While traditional historians and writers from the yoruba ethnic group make claims that the Benin people of Edo/Benin kingdom originated from the Yoruba ethnic majority, writers such as the late Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo n'Oba n'Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Erediauwa I disagrees and make counter claims that in fact, the Yoruba ethnic group are from the Benin kingdom.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja III, disagrees with a claim that Benin kingdom remains part and parcel of Oduduwa House/Yoruba race.

I totally agree with Victor Osaro Edo in his work, Benin–Ife Relations in Historical Perspective.

A Study of two Kingdoms, one Institution, were he inferred

" that there have been interactions between and among peoples from time immemorial. Benin and Ile-Ife are no

exception. And in the absence of writing, these interactions could not be documented, hence, the missing link and lack of chronological evidences

to unravel historical facts."

However, historical writings have proven that the Benin kingdom, th n known as Igodomigodo had existed as far back in the 900s and ruled by kings referred to as the Ogisos. After the reign of about 36 Ogisos, the Edo people rejected and brought the Ogiso dynasty to a stop around the 11th century AD.

Prince Oranmiyan, son of the king of Ife was sent to handle the crisis and fill in the leadership vacuum created. He would later enthrone his son, Eweka I as the first Oba of Benin. The Oranmiyan lineage would rule down to this day.
